Arts, Briefly: ‘Idol’ Leads the Night, but by Smaller Margin
Viewers were not much impressed with a Shania Twain-themed episode of “American Idol” on Tuesday night, as Fox’s usually substantial margin of victory shrank against a lineup of new CBS shows. According to Nielsen’s estimates, Fox’s “American Idol” led the 8 p.m. time slot as usual, but with a somewhat reduced 18.8 million viewers, as it faced stiff competition from “NCIS” (15.9 million) on CBS and “Dancing With the Stars “ (12.2 million) on ABC. At 9, CBS’s “NCIS: Los Angeles” (15.5 million) won the hour, ahead of Fox’s “Glee” (12.6 million), which was down nearly a half-million viewers from last week. CBS also led at 10 p.m. as its drama “The Good Wife” (12.1 million) topped NBC’s “Parenthood” (5.9 million) and ABC’s “V” (5 million). Fox still managed to place first for the night over all, with CBS second and ABC third. NBC completed fourth, with “The Biggest Loser” (7.5 million).
