Arts, Briefly: ‘The Big Bang Theory’ Gets Syndication Deal

Prepare to see “The Big Bang Theory” on tv a lot more often. Repeats of the popular CBS sitcom have been picked up by the cable channel TBS and by local stations owned by Fox in what is believed to be one of the most lucrative TV syndication deals ever, executives announced Saturday. The parties would not disclose the terms of the deal, but Variety reported that it “set a record price for a cable off-network sitcom purchase.” Warner Brothers, the producer and distributor of “Big Bang,” stated stations’ interest in the series had risen steadily as it prepared to sell the repeats, in part because there are few traditional, multicamera comedies that attract a broad audience. “Big Bang,” which features Jim Parsons (above, with Mayim Bialik) is now in its third season and the highest-rated sitcom on tv among adults aged 18 to 49. The repeats will begin being shown on local stations and on TBS in the fall of 2011. TBS may schedule the episodes at 10 p.m. so that they lead into Conan O’Brien’s coming speak show on that channel.
